Imagine a Polaris Missile launched from the bottom of the river and exploding directly beneath your lure and you have some sense of a topwater strike from a Tennessee River rockfish.
It's a double on stripers

Frequently caught drifting live shad, at Scenic City Charters we prefer the topwater bite. We guarantee a fishing adrenalin rush like you've rarely experienced. It is a seasonal early-spring pattern, and often a shortlived daylight or evening bite. But hit the right day and you'll want to come back again and again for another dose.

They are saltwater striped bass that have been stocked in freshwater, and they like it. Locally called rockfish or stripers, they range from two or three pounds up to the state record striper of 65 lbs., 6 ozs. My personal best is 42 pounds.
